Mountaineering

With the spectacular peaks of Mont Blanc, the Matterhorn and the Monte Rosa calling the Aosta Valley home, the region is a real draw for mountaineers.

The landscape of the Aosta Valley lends itself perfectly to mountaineering – with mighty peaks including the Matterhorn, Monte Bianco (Mont Blanc) and Monte Rosa. It is a popular activity in summer and in winter, with numerous certified guides and excursions available.

In recent years, Via Ferrata – solid structures and vertical ladders some 20 or 30 metres long – has become an exciting new adventure activity in the Aosta Valley, with routes available from Valtournenche, Val de Lys, Valgrisenche or Val Veny. Rock climbing is a popular summer past-time and ski mountaineering is available in the winter months.

VIA FERRATA

A via ferrata (Italian for “iron road”) is a protected climbing route found in the Alps. The essence of a modern via ferrata is a steel cable which runs along the route and is periodically (every 3 to 10 metres (9.8 to 32.8 ft)) fixed to the rock. Using a via ferrata kit, climbers can secure themselves to the cable, limiting any fall, making for a safe yet thrilling walk. Check out some of the varied Via Ferrata routes that are on offer in the valley.
