February in the Aosta Valley: Stunning Wintry Landscapes and Events

As the crisp, white blanket of winter settles over the breathtaking Aosta Valley, the region comes alive with a vibrant calendar of events blending the thrill of winter sports with the richness of local traditions. February in the Aosta Valley is not just about the stunning scenery and exhilarating ski slopes; it’s a time to celebrate traditions and local culture. This is what’s in store if you are heading to the Aosta region next month:

Traditional Crafts and Carnival Celebrations

While the renowned Fiera di Sant’Orso crafts fair may have drawn to a close, the artisan spirit continues with the Atelier on February 1st and 2nd. Set against the historical backdrop of Piazza Chanoux in Aosta, the Atelier is a showcase of exquisite local craftsmanship that offers a glimpse into the valley’s cultural heritage. The first weekend of February also presents the Gastronomic Pavilion in Piazza Plouves, where the flavours of the Aosta Valley come to life.

Embrace the Carnival Spirit

For an authentic Carnival experience, immerse yourself in the unique traditions of Coumba-Frèide. The colourful masks, exclusive to the Great Saint Bernard and Valpelline valleys, bring joy to villages. Key events take place in Allein on February 15th and 16th and in Etroubles on February 27th and 28th.

Major Sport Events and Snowy Solidarity

The Nordic Ski World Cup returns to Cogne after a six-year, from 31st January to 2nd February. The world’s best athletes will compete on the stunning trails at the foot of Gran Paradiso, with highlights including the Team Sprint (31st January), the Sprint in classical technique (1st February), and the 10 km freestyle (2nd February), alongside various side events.

The excitement continues in Cogne with the Marciagranparadiso on Sunday, 9th February. Renowned for its breath-taking scenery and technical challenges, the 30 km cross-country ski competition lies entirely within the Gran Paradiso National Park.

From 21st to 23rd February, Cogne will also play host to the Winter Triathlon World Championships, including the debut of Para Winter Triathlon competitions. This endurance sport combines running, cycling, and cross-country skiing in one seamless challenge across the winter terrain.

Finally, on February 15th, Pila brings together sports and solidarity with the charitable torchlight parade, I Light Pila. Participants can join with skis, snowboards, snowshoes or even on foot. All proceeds support the Susan G. Komen Italia association in their fight against breast cancer. Before the parade, local huts and bars welcome participants with music, hot tea and mulled wine.
