Winter in Valle d’Aosta is a continuous celebration. With ski slopes, spa relaxation, and delicious local dishes that captivate both heart and palate, January 2025 offers an unmissable blend of major sports events and traditional festivities.
Snow sports events
For the first time, Courmayeur hosts the Italia Polo Challenge from January 14th to 18th. Against the stunning backdrop of Mont Blanc, six international teams will compete on a snow-covered field in a spectacular tournament. Snow polo, both elegant and thrilling, promises to entertain visitors and locals alike.
But there’s more: the Nordic Ski World Cup returns to Cogne after six years. From January 31st to February 2nd, the world’s best athletes will race at the foot of Gran Paradiso along the stunning cross-country ski tracks of this famous tourist resort. Mark these dates: Team Sprint on January 31st, Sprint on February 1st, and the 10 km Freestyle on February 2nd. Several side events are scheduled.
Tradition and celebration
In January, Aosta Valley also invites you to experience its rich traditions. Carnival celebrations start early, with the colourful masks of the Coumba-Frèide bringing joy to the villages in the Gran San Bernardo Valley and Valpelline. Key events include Ollomont (January 11th), Bionaz (January 18th), and Valpelline (January 25th).
In Verrès, the Historical Carnival begins on January 11th with the opening ball. At the castle, the new historical figures, Caterina di Challant and Pierre d’Introd, will be introduced during an evening of live music and dancing.
On January 12th, Aosta becomes the heart of mountain Carnivals with a grand parade featuring ritual Carnivals (such as those of the Coumba-Frèide) and historical Carnivals (from Verrès, Pont-Saint-Martin, Nus, and Quart) from across Aosta Valley region.
The magic of the Sant’Orso Fair
Then there’s Sant’Orso, the festival of festivals. On January 30th and 31st, Aosta transforms into a massive showcase of craftsmanship, where you can admire over 1,000 years of artisanal tradition. It’s not just a fair; it’s a lively celebration filled with stalls, music, and vibrant energy.
For a more intimate atmosphere, the Sant’Orso Fair in Donnas is ideal. On January 19th, the medieval village hosts a unique event with around 500 artisans displaying their creations. Don’t miss the festivities leading up to the fair: the “Veillà” on Friday and the torchlight procession on Saturday.
In short, January in Aosta Valley is a feast for the senses. With snow, sports, and tradition, there’s something for everyone!
